Description
Derby and Hawke's house. The brick Derby house was the first brick home in Salem and is still the oldest brick home today in Salem. It was built in 1762 as a wedding present to Elias Derby and Elizabeth Crowinshield Derby. 18 years later Elias built the Hawke's house, so named because it was never lived in by the family and Elias used it as warehouse space only. It was later purchased on Derby's death by Benjamin Hawkes. In 1780 Elias and his family moved to Essex street where it is presumed the more affluent members of Salem society were moving to. Today they are both a part of the Salem Maritime National Historic site which was the first appointed site in the country.
